Tell me, what am I too you? A faceless creature? Your demons? Your false sense of reality? Or am I just your imagination? A figment that isn't and will never be real. I have many forms, each one different from the last. I can tell you what I am, but you won't believe me. No, your mortal mind can fathom the truth of my nature. My purpose. However, I'll tell you anyway. It is true I'm only a figment of the human imagination, but I prefer to be known as a sort of 6th sense, if you will. Without me, the way you perceive life wouldn't be the same. So careless and short it would be. Let me ask you another question to help aid you into understanding. You've found yourself at the end of a pistol, drawn to your face by a masked man. Are you afraid? Now, what if I told you that the man had no interest in pulling the trigger, in fact, the gun is unloaded and is only a stolen prop? Are you still afraid of the man? No? This is because you now know your not in any danger, but before, you were fearful that your life would end right then and there. You see, my purpose is to help you stay safe and be wary of your surroundings. To keep you from meeting your creator too soon. However, this doesn't stop all mortals from making deadly mistakes.
Author's note: As depicted by the image, my inspiration to this short piece of writing was 'fear'. I wanted to personify this commonly occurring psychological phenomenon a bit by having a direct conversation with the reader and try to make this seem ominous or dark (Although I feel like I failed that part) as I could. I also wanted to have the reader think, "What am I truly scared of?" or "What is fear?", but I didn't want to overdue it by asking the reader too many questions. The scenario was cliche, yes, but it's still a scary situation to be in, none the less. As for the ending bit, I don't know where I was going, but I was thinking about adrenaline junkies. This was shorter than I expected though, but hopefully it was a good attempt.
